Amputees Learn To Use Artificial Limbs (1916)

Roehampton, Greater London. World War One; military; veterans; medicine; disabilities; disabled; handicapped; wounded. Amputees practice using their new artificial limbs; etc. Opens with shot of several men crossing lawn (toward camera) in wheelchairs; a couple of them walking while leaning on the chairs; other soldiers; most also disabled; watch in BG. Line of men walking stiffly on artificial legs; using canes. Soldier uses artificial arm to snap whip; as line of others behind him watch. Arm extends with piece of paper held; in FG; and the man with the whip knocks paper out. Next; line of amputees walk on crutches; with trouser legs pinned up. CU 3 guys roll up trouser legs to show black shiny fake legs; pan to show 4th. Disabled men playing soccer against the nurses; one man in FG on crutches; most w/o. CU Artificial leg stepping to left; followed by the man’s normal leg; pauses; then he walks on. Group of men play tug-of-war; as other disabled men watch.
