Short Film
Director: ALEX WEIL
Production: CHARLEX
Animation/VFX: CHARLEX
The latest in-house project from Charlex follows the New York studio’s tradition of aiming high and then pushing out beyond what any reasonable person would expect from a spec piece, including in this case, recruiting Gabriel Byrne to wrap the film in his silky brogue.
Chris Byrnes, president: “We always like to have projects in the studio that allow us to experiment and explore. We started with an empty canvas and the mandate to make something great. We kicked the project off with no limitation to our artists to submit their ideas and treatments. We placed no restraints creatively on the brief and received a great range of choices.“
Alex Weil, director: “Originally, the piece was about shape shifting. It was about a car traveling through the night that breaks into another dimension. It shatters into thousands of parts that are reincarnated into the spirit of the car; The various aspects that form the soul of the car. The soul imagined by the car’s designers and those who can fully experience the power that the car was meant to convey. We realized what we had created was the dream of the car.“
John Karian, senior animator/animation development: “One of the challenges for us was limiting our ideas so the project was something realistic and do-able yet spectacular and epic. The shot that took the longest to animate was the formation of the Jaguar as the obsidian shards tumble down the hill. It’s one of those cases of taking something completely absurd and unnatural and not only illustrating what’s happening but also making it look good. The result is my favorite shot in the piece; it sets the tone for what follows.“
Jesse Newman, lead compositor: “I began working on ’ShapeShifter’ after designs had been chosen. The first time I saw Diana Park’s boards and the initial animatic, I was blown away. It’s rare for a visual effects company to have an in-house project of this magnitude, but from my previous experience working with Alex on ’One Rat Short’, I knew that the commitment Charlex would make to ’ShapeShifter’ would be extraordinary. Beyond that, not having to consider layers of client approvals always proves very liberating and tends to foster a much more experimental and collaborative process.“
