Sören Sieg: Carnaval de Cadiz. Performed by Beth Toulson & Zahrah Hutton, animated by Ruxaana Hutton

This video was among the 12 best of the Sören Sieg Musik Video Competition 2021! The video team explains: “The relentless energetic rhythms of this piece create a fun, fresh, vibrant sound that reminded us of the cut-out collages of Henri Matisse. These formed the inspiration for the animation. Matisse created these collages towards the end of his life, when he was no longer able to paint and so instead used scissors to cut shapes out of large painted sheets of paper, which his assistants then arranged under his instruction into large compositions. Matisse’s cut-outs cover a wide range of imagery – from natural forms inspired by his travels to more abstract forms based on dancers and jazz – but they all hold the same bold, lively, playful spirit as this movement, Carnaval de Cádiz.
