Simon Farintosh plays Castelnuovo-Tedesco Capricho de Goya No. 12, “No Hubo Remedio“

Guitar: 2015 Glenn Canin Strings: Dogal Diamente This piece is based off the 24th etching from Francisco Goya’s 80 Caprichos de Goya, entitled ’No Hubo Remedio’ (Nothing could be done). Each image from Goya’s cycle offers a bitingly satirical perspective on late 18th-century Spanish society, condemning the decline of rationality, superstition, fear of witchcraft, and smearing upper class members of society such as doctors and the clergy. In this print, a woman is being carried to her execution by the Spanish Inquisition, presumably for accusations of witchcraft or unfaithfulness. Her morose expression starkly contrasts the grotesque and virulent faces of the mob, as well as those of the stern authority figures leading her. Castelnuovo- Tedesco captures the dreary essence of this scene by presenting a Passacaglia on the Latin hymn ’Dies irae,’ which translates to “Day of Wrath.” The theme, marked ’Molto lento, cupo y grave,'
