Eire Apparent & Jimi Hendrix Stuttgart, Germany 1969

The song listing included in this posting doesn’t match up with that recorded by Tony Brown in the “Jimi Hendrix Concert Files“, a reliable source of concert dates published by Omnibus Press in 1999. ’Hey Joe’ and ’Voodoo Child (slight return)’ are not listed as being played in the first show, only in the 2nd. Likewise, the dialogue spoken by Jimi between songs during the first show doesn’t match up with that specified by Brown. Because Foxy Lady is cut short, it is possible that some tracks were missed such as Redhouse and Sunshine Of Your Love. Perhaps this recording was a combination of both shows, but this is unlikely as the recorder (an audience member) would be unlikely to pay out twice for what would have been similar shows. Eire Apparent (a band produced by Hendrix) supported the Jimi Hendrix Experience between January 11th and 23rd, for which they played 11 venues (each with 2 shows) while touring Germany and France, Stuttgart included. Because Brown has not being able to provide any track listing details for the Munich concert, played on the 15th of Jan - this could be concert from which this recording was made. Likewise, the Nurnberg concert, held on the the 16th of Jan, contains dialogue by Jimi during the first show that is very similar to the Intro dialogue in this posting, and the track listing is very similar. So this could be it also. Otherwise, all other dates have track listings that indicate that they could not be the concerts this recording came from. The recording itself is fairly raw, and I would clssify it as a Very Good Audience Recording. It is particularly unique in that it is the only Hendrix recording that I know of that includes tracks from his support act ’Eire Apparent’. They are given a fairly warm response by the audience (who were there primarily to see the ’great Jimi Hendrix’) and start with an old Everly Brothers standard ’The Price Of Love’ which they manage to turn into an all out jam session with a somewhat average bass solo by Chris Stewart They then break into another cover, Bob Dylan’s Highway 61 which was popular at that time, but lacks vocal strength by Ernie Graham. The only original they do is a Blues track which has a fast groove but is unforgettable. However, they finish off their short 30min set with another standard Gloria and is worth the wait. Their rendition of the Them’s classic is refreshing, and perhaps inspired Hendrix’ to finally do that studio recording which was finally released in 1979 as a 12“ Single by Polydor. Although this is not the best recording of early 1969 live Hendrix material, it is the only recording which has Eire Apparent captured live and is therefore a must have item in any Hendrix record collection.
