halloooo this is a little cover of the german folk song ’Die Grenzwacht hielt im Osten’! i did a cover of just one verse on youtube shorts nearly a year ago now, and quite a few people seemed to enjoy it, so i thought i’d do a full cover :) please let me know if you liked it!! as beautiful and tragic as this song is, it is also a product of its time and a product of german freikorps warfare in eastern europe and the baltics. it expresses, as well as the tragedy of war and loss, the feeling of german ownership of the baltic and eastern european regions, and these latter sentiments later became entrenched in nazi ideology, with which many of the freikorps fighters were later involved. all of this is to say: i share this song for its beautiful misery, for its reflection on the war and devastation that individual soldiers faced, but i do not share this song to in any way support the political narratives with which it was once associated, nor with modern political narratives whic
