Erben Organ Days 2020 live performance - Sonata Seconda Per Trombetta Sola by Giovanni Buonaventura Viviani (1638–1693). Jared Lamenzo, pipe organ, and Angela Gosse, trumpet. The delightful Sonata Seconda was written by Viviani, who composed for the court, the Church, and the opera in the musical genres of his time. Born in Florence, he became maestro da cappella at the Imperial Court in Innsbruck. He collaborated with Cavalli on two operas in Venice in 1677-8, and this piece dates from that time. From the end of his Opus IV collection, this sonata was expressly written for the trumpet of the time, and since used in church rather than secular contexts, the organ would be preferred as the accompanying instrument. The piece consists of a musical introduction followed by various dance movements. The Adagio in particular gives space for improvised embellishment. Towards the end of his life he returned to Tuscany, becoming maestro da cappella in Pistoia’s Cathedral. Pistoia is home also to the Hermans organ
