Ha iniziato la sua attività musicale all’età di 14 anni come giovane compositore per pianoforte. Ricevette la sua prima formazione musicale allo Sverdlovsk Musical Tekhnikum e nel 1937 si iscrisse al Conservatorio di Leningrado. Parallelamente studiò presso l’Istituto minerario del dipartimento di fisica presso l’Università statale di Leningrado. La seconda guerra mondiale e il successivo assedio di Leningrado interruppero i suoi studi. Si diplomò al Conservatorio di Mosca nel 1945 dove studiò composizione con Dmitry Shostakovich. La sua produzione musicale comprende un’ampia suite sinfonica, eseguita per la prima volta dall’orchestra Bolshoi di Mosca, l’opera “Alfa i Omega“, quattro oratori, due cantate, opere vocali-sinfoniche, musica da camera, musica per film e teatro e molte opere e arrangiamenti per ensemble di strumenti popolari russi. Музыкальную деятельность начал в 14 лет как юный композитор-пианист. Первое музыкальное образование получил в Свердловском музыкальном техникуме, а в 1937 году поступил в Ленинградскую консерваторию. Параллельно учился в Горном институте на физическом факультете Ленинградского государственного университета. Вторая мировая война и последующая блокада Ленинграда прервали его учебу. В 1945 году он окончил Московскую консерваторию, где учился композиции у Дмитрия Шостаковича. Среди его музыкальных работ - большая симфоническая сюита, впервые исполненная оркестром Большого театра, опера “Альфа и Омега“, четыре оратории, две кантаты, вокально-симфонические произведения, камерная музыка, музыка для кино и театра, множество произведений и переложений для ансамблей русских народных инструментов.
