PACS 164A Lecture 11: Tragedy at Amritsar. Rebellion Heats Up
In this lecture, Professor Michael Nagler discusses two “phases“ of Gandhi’s early life in India, the first as the time period between the years of 1922-1924, in which Gandhi was in prison, and second in 1931 at the height of the Freedom Struggle. Professor Nagler outlines the chronology of this first phase by synopsizing the changes in India’s politics and culture at the time - particularly changes in levels of nationalism - and Gandhi’s experience navigating those shifts. Nagler goes on to outline the chronology of both of these phases, discussing notable political shifts and events such as the Law of Progression, the Indian Immigration Acts, the Rowlett Acts, Viramgam, Civil Disobedience, struggles between Indian Hindus and Muslims, the Ahmedabad Mill Strike, and the overarching struggle to win Indian “Swaraj“ or “Self-Rule.“
