Ben Aylon • KODO Earth Celebration 2023

Ben Aylon • KODO Earth Celebration Earth Beat Project • Feat. Jaechol Choi & Ben Aylon @EARTHCELEBRATION @KodoHeartbeat Happy to announce another show at the Earth Celebration in Sado Island, Japan, in August, with some of KODO’s top drummers. Last year, I was invited by my dear friend Yuta Sumiyoshi to take part in a new project called ’Earth Beat’ as part of the EC festival. We had so much fun improvising together so I’m returning this year for a deeper dive that will include a few days of rehearsals, as we decided to use Doudou Ndiaye Rose as the main inspiration for creation. Here is a video from last year’s performance, at a specific moment of climax. Check out the different drums and the flow of all the musicians. Jaechol Choi (next to me on the South Korean chimes) is an awesome human being and just unbelievably fun to play with. To me, he had the strongest impact on the group’s sound and feel. Sado Island is a unique place in Japan, and KODO is based on the island. They have an amazing facility for rehearsals which was built by local shipbuilders, and holds hundreds of drums that are used for their shows and practice. Later on, I will share more documentary footage and musical moments from the last trip.
