Southgate’s first presser as manager

Gareth Southgate has stood down as England manager, saying it is time for a “new chapter” for the national team. He announced his decision to quit in a statement issued by the Football Association on Tuesday morning, following the team’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday night. In his first presser as interim manager in September 2016 after Sam Allardyce was sacked, Southgate said, “I felt it was important to step forward in a leadership position at this moment in time. We’ve got an opportunity to work with a group of players who are young and they need some guidance. We’ve got to provide stability.“ Watch more on Independent TV: The Independent is the world’s most free-thinking newsbrand, providing global news, commentary and analysis for the independently-minded.
