Housewives at Wigan, Lancashire do an evening shift from 6pm to 10pm at the cotton mills. Shots of Mrs Nellie Smith and another woman at work in the mill winding cotton onto reels (natural sound). Nellie says to the other woman “I think this leisure shift’s alright“ and they joke about having to get their husbands to put the kids to bed. Several takes of this sequence as we can barely hear them above the sound of the machinery on the first go. General interior view of the cotton mill. C/U of thread winding onto spools on the huge machine. M/S of Mrs Smith deftly removing reels from the machine and depositing them in a box trolley.
