When these photographs were taken, the country formed part of the Russian Empire. The Cathedral of the Sea, as it was first called bears the name St. Nicholas Orthodox Sea Cathedral. The Cathedral served as the garrison church during this period. During the Soviet period, the Cathedral was used as a warehouse, gymnasium and meeting Hall. Today, it is once again an Orthodox house of worship.
