On December 10, 2008, the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Academic Council on the United Nations System sponsored a panel discussion featuring former Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, Paul Heinbecker; former Vice-rector of the United Nations University, Ramesh Thakur; and Canada Research Chair in International Human Rights, Rhoda Howard-Hassmann. The panellists discussed a variety of topics ranging from the origins of the Declaration of Human Rights, its successes and failures, as well as how the Canadian government has drifted away from a leadership role on the human rights front
