The Lebensraum Myth

In 1941 Germany invaded the Soviet Union. The narrative says that this was done to complete Hitler’s dream of lebensraum. But is this actually the reason? History suggests otherwise. When the Germans themselves explained why they went East, lebensraum doesn’t even come into the equation. If we examine the events surrounding the start of the war, the narrative begins to unravel and it becomes clear why they declared war. Let’s look at the events. What role did the Soviet Union play? The best books I’d say for the build up to the conflicts and crisis’ of Hitler’s time in power would be perhaps ’The Origins of the Second World War - Taylor.’ and ’Churchill Hitler and the Unnecessary War - Patrick J. Buchanan’. Hitler tends to ’react’ to events rather than having a long-term goal he sticks rigidly to, this was no exception. This view is clear to anyone whos read up much on the man on serious biographies. Many quote Irving as a good author, but there is others. I’d recommend John Toland’s biography of him, especially for the pre-war era of Hitler’s life. You really learn the character of Hitler from those that knew him.
