The Gippsland Spiny Crayfish is a large member of the Euastacus group of spiny crays that are endemic to the freshwater rivers and streams of south-eastern Australia. Although they are superficially similiar to the familiar Yabbie (Cherax destructor), they are in fact quite different and are very long lived, taking a considerable time to reach reproductive maturity and as such they are especially susceptible to overfishing.
