This is “Okubyou Na Venus“ (VHP49229), a 1986 “music video anime“ OVA. Join our “anime heroine,“ Yumiko Kirita, who travels to New York with the dream to become a star on this musical adventure. She makes plenty of mistakes along the way but she never puts her head down, fighting to the end. Along the way, we meet a cast of characters including her bumbling but encouraging manager (D.J.), a few gangsters, and ? Will she be able to achieve her dreams? This obscure OVA was almost exclusively produced by unknown players in the anime industry. The executive producer, Yoshiharu Kuno, is little-known outside of some equally little-known VHD exclusive productions like the “male-oriented“ live-action California Girls, and the producer Masato Mizobuchi is only known for working on the hyper-violent OVA .. The real star of the show is the music which consists simply of 3 extracts of Maiko Okamoto’s brilliant album “Fascination“ (produced by Ami Ozaki, who wrote popular songs for such City Pop legends as Anri and Seiko Matsuda, besides her own fantastic releases). It also features some notable Japanese session musicians such Eiji Shimamura & Kenji Takamizu. This anime has only officially been released on JVC’s own VHS and (the Japanese-exclusive) VHD formats. This is the first time that the VHD version is being made available and, along with it, the superior image quality that the VHD release offers.
