“Sandansko Horo“ (arr. for Andean flutes) - Leonardo Garcia

Sandansko Horo is a southwestern Bulgarian dance featuring a 22/16 meter. The rhythmic pattern subdivides in a 9 9 4 that can also be understood as a 2(2 2 2 3) (2 2). This version is an arrangement for five Andean flutists playing quena, quenacho, chromatic zampoña, phala and ocarina. The arrangement and recording were entirely achieved at home’s kitchen. The challenge was to obtain an acceptable musical result without any external aid and in spite of difficult recording conditions (I live in a small downtown apartment subjected to considerable levels of noise). The tools employed were extremely basic: an iMac OS X computer, a Sony MD MZ-R50 as an audio inter-phase, an AT 822 microphone, a pair of common mini headphones and a set of mini-jack cables to connect all the devices together. Computer software included “Finale“ (music score), “Amadeus Pro“ (sound recording) and “Garage Band“ (multi-track work).
