Original Model 1879 Winchester-Hotchkiss made by Winchester in 1879 for the US Navy, and chambered in .45-70 Gov’t. This rifle had some previous repairs that led to pieces of the stock chipping at the wrist while filming, so this ol’ fella will need some fixing now.
These rifles were made for a set of US Army trials starting in 1879. They were prone to cracking (like mine), and this problem was fixed with the improved 1880 and 1883 models. The Army chose not to adopt any of the rifles from the trials. The Navy bought several of them, including a number of Winchester-Hotchkiss rifles.
