Sword Shorts: Sabre Parry Cut Head (#14)

The fourteenth in our series of short technique videos. This week: A sabre R&R drill The student is given a cue, and must recognize it and respond accordingly. In this case, the master attacks randomly, and the student must recognize where the attack is, and parry appropriately. The student is not told ahead of time where the attack will be, so must develop the ability to recognize the “sight picture” of each attack, and protect that target, without conscious reflection. The master varies the size of the cue- how obvious it is or isn’t- as is necessary. This drill also develops the pattern of riposting to the head from several different parries. My fencing master, Maître Adam Adrian Crown, has 40 years’ experience as a Fencing Master- and has a lot to share with you.
