The Ukrainian composer Samuil (Samuel) Maykapar (Самуил Моисеевич Майкапар,1867 -- 1938) studied at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and later with Theodor Leschetizky. After a concertizing career in Europe he returned to St. Petersburg as a professor at the Conservatory, and performed a complete Beethoven sonata cycle there in 1927.
