NEWPORT NYC : ROY, BOBBY, CARTER, BUD, VIC, NORVO, TEDDY, RIDLEY, JIM HALL, GENE (Radio City)

HONEYSUCKLE ROSE / JUMPIN’ WITH SYMPHONY SID -- from the very first Newport in New York Jazz Festival, the beginning of the first Radio City Music Hall Jam Session -- in my case, a laughable attempt to record the proceedings from one of the highest balconies in the Music Hall, with a portable cassette recorder with a built-in microphone. That the engineers seemed unaware of how acoustic jazz should sound did not improve the result. Still, the music comes through. Gene Krupa, drums; Larry Ridley, string bass; Teddy WIlson, piano; Jim Hall, guitar; Red Norvo, vibraphone; Bud Freeman, tenor saxophone; Benny Carter, alto saxophone; Vic Dickenson, trombone; Bobby Hackett, cornet; Roy Eldridge, trumpet. And a very excitable audience: myself among them. Recorded by Michael Steinman for JAZZ LIVES ().
