1991 Brun C91 Group C Car: Warm Up, Accelerations & Judd EV V8 Pure Sound!
If you’ve gotten to know me over the years, you know I love to bring home some long and endless pure sound scenes of the cars I record. You also may have realized that similar footage is mainly possible during test days rather than a race weekend, with packed and ’noisy’ track. But judging from the video up here one would not say.
So with great amazement here is the first of two videos I’m gonna share with you about a very special Group C car of the final era: the Brun C91. It was a real joy for ears and eyes recording this Repsol beauty, superbly managed by Scott Sport, being driven flawlessly by Alex Müller during the 2023 Dix Mille Tours by @peterautoracing at Circuit Paul Ricard. Alex managed to took pole and won both races of the Group C Racing series on the French circuit.
Hope to upload the second video as soon as possible! And yes, it will be a on board ;)
The Brun C91 was built by Walter Brun’s Brun Motorsport of Switzerland. The company was founded in 1983 as a World Sportscar Championship team when the Group C regulations was reaching its peak. Success was there and the team would go on to win the 1986 WSC championship with the Porsche 962.
In 1989, he had the ambitious project of racing in parallel in Formula One and endurance racing and for 1991, with the introduction of the engines in ’Group C’, he aimed to create both a single-seater and a prototype fitted with a 70° V12 engine called Neotech. This was to be the common point between the two cars, but was never fitted in either the F1 car or the prototype. Yet tests carried out in 1990 with a Porsche 962C gave impressive results. But the funding never came.
The new Sportscar Racing regulations banned turbo engines and rotary engines in favour of atmospheric engines with a maximum displacement of 3.5 litres. The number of cylinders was left free. No changes were made to the dimensions of the chassis. On the other hand, the minimum weight was sharply reduced from 900 kg to 750 kg so the use of carbon fibre became standard.
Development of the C91 started in 1989 and by December 1990, 75% of the work was completed but yet with the engine headache to sort out. The C91 was designed to host any engine configuration so the team had to make some compromises to optimize spaces such as the body shape, front cooling rather than on the side of the chassis (to leave space for a possible turbo engine) and rear suspension placed outboard next to the rear wheels in order to maximize the tunnel size. By the end the team opted for a Judd EV, naturally-aspirated V8 engine that was being used in Formula 1 on the 1990 Leyton House CG901 and by Brabham with their BT59. It was linked to a 6-speed manual transmission.
The Brun C91 made its debut at the fifth round of the 1991 World Sportscar Championship at the Nürburgring driven by Oscar Larrauri and Gregor Foitek. Unfortunately, the car didn’t race due to technical difficulties after qualifying. The next round being in Magny-Cours, Jesus Pareja replaced Foitek and the car did start the race only to retire after five laps. Next round was in Mexico City where the C91 lasted 31 laps before retiring with starter motor issues. Its last round in Autopolis, Japan, wasn’t better: it failed again after 20 laps when the gearbox broke. The funding for 1992 failed to materialize and the C91 would be retired putting an end to Brun Motorsport and its presence in the World Sportscar Championship.
