Chas Newby, born Charles Newby on September 18, 1941, in Liverpool, England, is a British musician who is known for his brief stint as the bassist for The Beatles in 1960. His time with the band was a transitional phase before Paul McCartney officially joined as the permanent bassist.
In 1960, The Beatles were still in their early days and undergoing lineup changes. At that time, they consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and drummer Pete Best. During a short period in early 1960, Chas Newby temporarily filled in on bass guitar for the band when they performed in Hamburg, Germany.
Newby’s involvement with The Beatles was limited to a few live performances. He played with the band for a few shows at the Indra Club and the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg, where they were honing their skills and building their reputation as a live act. Newby’s time with the band came to an end when McCartney officially joined as the bassist in May 1961.
