Leonard Bernstein: Halil, Nocturne for Flute and Orchestra (1981) Dedicated to the memory of Yadin Tanenbaum Guy Eshed, flute Lahav Shani, conductor Flutist Yadin Tanenbaum was only 19, at the height of his musical powers, when he fell in the Yom Kippur war. Leonard Bernstein, one of the closest friends of the orchestra, who accompanied it from the establishment of the State, learned of Yadin’s tragic story and heard the recordings of his playing compiled by his parents. Bernstein decided to dedicate the work Halil to Yadin’s memory. The work’s premieres took place in Tel Aviv and at the Sultan’s Pool in Jerusalem in May 1981, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, with soloist Jean Pierre Rampal and the Israel Philharmonic. Halil has since been frequently performed around the world by the top orchestras and the most celebrated flutists. To commemorate the Day of Remembrance for the Fallen Soldiers and for the Victims of Acts of Terror, the orchestra has chosen to broadcast the performance of Halil,
