TANREN UCHI TRAINING - Morihei Ueshiba and Morihiro Saito Filmed in Iwama, Ibaraki Prefecture Tanren-uchi: From Saitoโ€™s Tradition Aikido Vol II: โ€œThe purpose of tanren uchi practice is to develop stability of the hips and improve the grip on the ken.โ€œ โ€™Tanโ€™ means to forge, โ€™Renโ€™, to practice, and โ€™Uchiโ€™, to strike. In Oโ€™Senseiโ€™s days the Tanren was made of saplings, bound tightly, placed lengthwise and supported by their ends and struck. The practice hoped to instill proper cutting method in the whole body. Proper hip strength unleashes maximum power. The practice has a similarity to the striking training of the Jigen-ryu. Same set up: bundles of sticks tied together, resting horizontally, and with the practitioner repeatedly striking downwards into the target. Interesting to note some differences in the training of Ueshiba and the Jigen-ryu format: 1.) He isnโ€™t training solo, but with a partner - one at either side of the target, facing each other. 2.) He doesnโ€™t solely attack the target, but attacks to the rear and all around him, with a 360 sense of awareness. 3.) He doesnโ€™t strike the same spot repeatedly with the same strike but makes a variety of attacks - stabbing, striking, slicing, movements. For contrast see the Tanren practice of Jigen-ryu: . The Takemusu Aikido Online Dojo is a community of budo practitioners from many different countries around the world, all training in the spirit of sharing and learning together.
