Palestinian detainees from Gaza recount brutal treatment in Israeli prisons
“Our eyes were covered day and night, and our hands and legs were cuffed. They released dogs on us and beat us continuously.”
Released Palestinian detainees arrive at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia, Gaza, after being released from Israeli prisons. According to Tal Steiner, Director of the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI), there has been an “uprise in the number, scale, and gravity of abuse by prison guards and interrogators” in all Israeli prisons and detention centers towards Palestinian prisoners from Gaza and the West Bank.
Israel has detained between 4,000 and 5,000 people from the Gaza Strip, including women, children, the elderly, paramedics, journalists, doctors, and aid workers, according to Palestinian and Israeli authorities.
More than 1,500 are believed to have been released back to Gaza.
Released Palestinians have described some of the ill treatment they endured, including sexual abuse, electrocution, beatings, sleep and food deprivation, humiliation, and being kept in degrading positions and urinated on, as well as being handcuffed tightly for prolonged periods, causing severe injuries that led to amputation in some cases.
