Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple | Kerala Temple with a difference
The most renowned, Parassinikadavu Sri Muthappan temple aka the Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan temple is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrim sites in north Kerala. Situated about 20 km from Kannur, the temple is situated on the banks of the Valapattnam river. The main deity of the temple is Sri Muthappan, a combination of two Hindu deities – Thiruvappana (Lord Vishnu) and Vellatom (Lord Shiva). A much-noted fact about this temple is that, in spite of being a Hindu temple, it attracts people from all walks of life, irrespective of religion or caste. Yet another interesting fact about this temple is that, unlike any other diety, the dog is considered as the vehicle of the Lord Muthappan, and hence, it is a common sight to see dogs being nurtured inside the temple premises and is allowed even within the holy sanctum. The devotees are given boiled black beans and tea as Prasadam (devotional offering). Fish and toddy are the customary offerings to Muthappan and they are distributed here. The temple is also famous for Theyyam, a ritual art that is performed here on a daily basis.
