Messer class notes: Leckchner’s Winden against Krump Versetz
Last Friday the messer study group at HVN tackled winding against Krump Versetzen (204v-205v). This type of play is a bit enigmatic and we did struggle with coming up with matching interpretations. As such I figured that we’d record all of them and put them up as research notes.
A couple of observations:
- Krump Versetzen could be a reaction to a regular winding, directing it away with a hanging parry. This is really hard to work against with the existing framework of winding, which might explain why this set of plays is specifically there.
- Krump Versetzen seems to be what happens when someone steps in with a hanging parry, since illustration on 204 v seems to show one fencer attempting a winding to right high Hengen, but the point is past their opponent’s head. This would also make sense for the ’crooked displacement’, since it allows you to get in close and grapple (just like in the Glasgow Fightbook)
- Once the winding stops this intent, the trick is to go back and forth between long and short edge
