My favorite songs in musicals have always been epic character-driven pieces that swing wildly between musical textures and emotions, such as Dust and Ashes, Epiphany or The Ballad of Jane Doe. Additionally, I’ve always adored the passion and grandeur of rock opera, and there is perhaps no character that fits this style better than Crowley. The minute the title and opening chords of this song popped into my head, I knew I had to write the piece our favorite dramatic demon deserved. I wrote the first draft of the lyrics in about a week in September, and I’ve worked off and on on the arrangement for nearly eight months.
