GSB-100: George Spencer-Brown Centenary Celebration
Sunday 2 April 2023 marked the centenary of George Spencer-Brown’s birth. Even though his birthday is not being celebrated as a national holiday, as he had wished, we marked the occasion by holding a commemoration and celebration.
Spencer-Brown’s 1969 book Laws of Form was a work of pure mathematics that many recognized as being of tremendous spiritual and scientific importance, giving the text a significant metaphysical aura and its author a legendary status that is quite rare today. The biography of Spencer-Brown lives up to the mythology, and lends itself to the mathematical and scientific interpretations and applications of his work.
We were joined by friends who knew Spencer-Brown and who shared brief recollections of his life. We also announced the formation of our society, the George Spencer-Brown Society, news about our recent and forthcoming publications, such as Distinction: Journal of Form, and information about our upcoming conferences.
The proceedings included:
A brief introduction to GSB’s life and works
Personal memories from those who knew him
General discussion
Book reviews
News and future plans
A toast to GSB’s memory
