(11 May 2018) Despite moving out 10 ago years ago, NORAD’s deep underground bunker mythologized by movies such as “Dr. Strangelove“ and “War Games“ is still operational.
NORAD, North American Aerospace Defense Command, and the U.S. Northern Command watch the skies for missile attacks or wayward aircraft from a building at Peterson Air Force Base in nearby Colorado Springs, Colorado.
But a so-called Alternate Command Center remains deep inside Cheyenne Mountain Complex that was built inside tunnels cut into a granite mountain that was designed to withstand a nuclear blast.
“Due to an increased threat, we will come to this alternate command center at Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station because the increased protection that it affords from physical attack, chemical attack or an electromagnetic pulse. And so depending on the tensions of the time we will determine whether we need to move the watch what we call it from Building 2 (at Peterson Air Force Base) to Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station,“ said Travis Morehen, Deputy Director, NORAD/US NORTHCOM.
The complex is not a Cold War relic, but a working area four days a month for staff that monitor satellites, radar and other classified tracking systems for military threats.
NORAD, a joint partnership between Canada and the United States is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year.
