2023 BRICS Summit - The Agenda

The 15th annual BRICS summit is set to commence in Johannesburg next week – for the first in person gathering since the pandemic. From a term coined in 2001 by a leading economist looking at the largest developing nations outside the G7, BRICS – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - has developed into a truly global organization. And it’s one that others are now seeking to sign up to - 23 countries have formally expressed their desire to join up. So is BRICS poised for expansion? And what will that mean for the world? In this week’s episode, Juliet Mann considers what’s set to dominate discussion in Johannesburg with Ben Joubert, South Africa’s Sous Sherpa for BRICS, Wang Huiyao, Founder and President of the Center for China and Globalization and Jim O’Neill, a Senior Advisor at Chatham House who first coined the term BRIC in 2001.
