Back in the good ol’ days, people stuck up a mountain without supplies just had to freeze to death and become a gruesome warning for others. But thanks to the marvels of modern technology, help is just a push of a button away. Chinese drone giant DJI has teamed up with Nepalese company Airlift and video production company 8KRAW to successfully make the world’s first drone deliveries to Mount Everest (known as Mount Qomolangma in China), paving the way for safer resupplying of Everest’s camps, and removing the enormous amount of garbage that now litters the side of the world’s tallest mountain.
DJI successfully flew three oxygen bottles and of supplies from Base Camp (at an altitude of 5,364m) to Camp 1 (at 6,000m), and then returned with a payload of trash. It’s expected that, once tests are finished, the drone could carry a payload of 15kg in just a 12-minute round trip, day or night. It ordinarily takes a Sherpa six to eight hours to make the same journey, through the treacherous Khumbu Icefall.
