Since its appearance in early the 1930s, “望春風” has been one of the most popular Taiwanese Hokkien pop songs and Taiwanese folk songs .
Taiwan’s first pop star singer, 純純 (Sun-Sun) [1914-1943].
Birth name: 劉清香 (Liú Qīng-Xiāng).
Born in poverty, her parents ran noodle stalls for a living. At the age of 13, she dropped out of public school and joined a Taiwanese opera troupe to learn traditional opera.
During the 1930s, Taiwan had already been under Japanese rule for over 30 years, and there were concerns that Taiwanese culture was beginning to fade as most people were listening to Japanese popular music. Columbia Records recruited a group of talented singers, composers, and songwriters to produce hits based on traditional Taiwanese Hokkien language and music. Sun-Sun became Taiwan’s first pop star singer.
