He sees it as Rapunzel’s fault since she promised to help him remove the black rocks earlier and yet didn’t help him when he asked later. In reality, Varian’s experiment on the black rocks caused his father to become encased in amber. The ending of the AMV reflects Varian apologizing to his father for his accident and expressing his remorse for not being able to save him nor avenge him.
