U18 1978 Ice Hockey European Championship final game: Finland-USSR

The final game in the 1978 U18 European championships. Finland versus Soviet Union. Jari Kurri sinks the decider in 2nd overtime. The game system was a bit weird by modern standards. The game was even after three periods. Then they played a full fourth period (1st overtime period) and since the score was still even after the extra 20 minutes, they played a second overtime period, which was sudden death style. Wicked way to play, since the final group was still kind of round robin. Final group results: (Finland - Sweden 2-1, USSR - Czechoslovakia 3-0) These were carried over from the preliminary groups. Finland - Czechoslovakia 6-2 (2-0,3-0,1-2) USSR - Sweden 5-3 (0-2,1-0,4-1) Sweden - Czechoslovakia 4-2 (0-2,3-0,1-0) Finland - USSR 6-5 ot (1-2,1-1,1-0,2-2,1-0)
