Recently exonerated man fatally shot during traffic stop in Georgia
Authorities in Camden County, Georgia, have released dashcam and bodycam footage of the fatal shooting of Leonard Cure on Monday, October 16.
The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said Cure was stopped on October 16 after driving at speeds over 100 mph on Interstate 95 near Woodbrine, Georgia.
Footage from the traffic stop shows a lone deputy confronting Cure after his truck has come to a stop, shouting for Cure to get out of his truck.
A violent scuffle ensues, during which the officer first uses his baton and stun gun before firing his weapon.
Emergency services arrive at the scene and carry out CPR on Cure, who can be seen bleeding from his side.
Cure died following the shooting, local media reported.
The Innocence Project of Florida said on October 17 that they were “devastated” to learn of Cure’s death.
Cure was wrongfully convicted in 2003 of the armed robbery of a Walgreens in Broward County, Florida, before being exonerated in 2020 with the help of the Innocence Project.
He had recently received his compensation for more than 16 years of wrongful imprisonment, the Innocence Project said.
