Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was perhaps one of the musicians and composers who best represented the spirit of his time (and place). Although we know nothing about his early training, we do know that he was an exceptionally gifted performer on both the violin and flauto traverso (the latter was always his first choice).
While living in Paris he was extraordinarily prolific, and much of his work was also published. Primarily through those publications, he was one of a very elite group of artists who were able to make a good living without the support of a major institution or a wealthy and influential patron.
