Ruins are not altogether obscure, but their early work sure is. “Ruins III“ (later reissued as “Infect“) is their first full-length, a true would-be math rock masterpiece that was released well before the genre was given a name. This album is somewhat hard to find, even through file-sharing, but it’s 100% worth the effort. The music primarily consists of highly complex/chaotic drums and heavily distorted bass, punctuated with crazed violin strains and vocal yelps/shrieks in a non-sensical language. The low fidelity of the recording and the sweatiness of the performances really gives you a feeling of being at the session. I played part of this album (I think it was the track “.“) for a friend of mine and he immediately exclaimed “Lightning Bolt!“ While I do enjoy L.B., it would be an exercise in futility to deny that they based their sound almost entirely on the template of Ruins.
