Visit Visit our website To test designs of new Apollo spacesuits, and to understand the types of tasks that astronauts could perform in low or zero gravity, a large water tank was employed. This film shows SCUBA divers in the tank, negotiating using handholds on a grid which is made up of hexagons. A somewhat similar open mesh hexagonal grid floor was used aboard Skylab. Note: Footage from a closer camera can be seen in this related film: In the film, the diver climbs across the grid and then removed and replaces a handle-like device. The grid shown is also demonstrated to support toeholds, enabling the diver to have the leverage to lift and emplace the handle-like device over and over again. At 8:17, a diver attempts to secure a large case or instrument package to the grid, using the handle to hold it in place. It does not work.
