Due to heavy rains in Sochi, Russia, today on June 14 2023 the Matsesta River burst its banks, leading to significant flooding. The Khostinsky district was particularly affected, with cars, several buildings, and adjacent territories underwater. The flood report was received by the Ministry of Emergency Situations at 4 am on June 14, which confirmed the inundation of four adjacent territories, an office building, and a water pumping station. Importantly, no socially significant objects were reported as being affected by the water. The Sochi administration noted that at least 15 mm of rain fell in an hour, which triggered a sensor for raising the water level on Matsesta, reaching the “dangerous phenomenon“ mark. Along with roads and houses, gas pipeline networks were also damaged. Response crews are currently responding to the situation. A storm warning is in effect in Sochi, with further heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hail expected on June 14. Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid areas near the water. Sochi’s beaches have been temporarily closed until the weather fully stabilizes. Mayor Alexei Kopaygorodsky confirmed that there have been no incidents reported due to the incident. Efforts to eliminate the consequences of the bad weather involve 184 people and 42 pieces of equipment.
