Elizabeth Rethberg, “Einsam in trüben Tagen,“ Lohengrin

The great Elizabeth Rethberg (l894-1976) was, in addition to being a brilliant Wagnerian, also known for her portrayal of some heroic Italian roles, most particularly Aida. In fact, she was considered by many to be perhaps the greatest Aida of her generation. This Wagnerian aria is one of Wagner’s most lyric and melodic, and Rethberg sings it beautifully.
