The colors that are used here are presumably Lead White (now Titanium White), Yellow Ochre, Vermillion (now Cad Red Light) and Ivory Black. The combination is highly popular amongst artists and extensively used. Although not true primaries, these can be effectively used using the color relationship theory of primaries and complementaries. I feel that since Zorn was a highly regarded artist always on the run for portrait commissions, he wanted a set of colors that are available everywhere and also used other colors like green and blue whenever necessary.
