Niger Temporarily Stops Granting New Mining Licenses for Mineral Resource - The Niger junta, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani since the July 2023 coup, has implemented a range of changes impacting various aspects of the country. Politically, they dissolved the parliament, suspended the constitution, and detained ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, while promising a return to civilian rule within three years. Security-wise, they revamped the military leadership, severed ties with France’s Barkhane counter-terrorism operation, and sought closer defence alliances with fellow junta-governed Mali and Burkina Faso. Economically, they imposed sanctions on Bazoum’s allies, renegotiated mining contracts, and attempted to curb corruption. These changes met with mixed reactions domestically and internationally, highlight the junta’s bid to consolidate power and reshape Niger’s political and socio-economic landscape. And the junta has made another bold move, temporarily suspending the granting of new mining licenses. But why is the junta launching such a major mining sector overhaul? In today’s video, we will shed more light on this question and many more. Niger’s self-declared military administration has temporarily halted the issuance of new mining licenses, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Mines. According to Reuters, the ministry initially did not specify the reason behind the suspension of licenses. However, the Ministry later came out to clarify that the temporary halting of the issuance of new mining licenses is the first step in an audit of Niger’s mining sector as it seeks to boost government revenue. A memo from the mining ministry seen by various news outlets also revealed that the country wants to take stock of existing mining licenses. “We’re trying to figure out who holds the mining licenses and what reforms need to be implemented in order for the state to increase its profits,” Fatimata Korgom, the deputy secretary general at the mining ministry said in a voice note shared by a junta spokesman. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅SUPPORT US /AFFILIATE LINKS Use this affiliate link for your purchases at #MIZIZI International - Support our channel - PayPal: newafricachannel(at) Follow us on Instagram - Follow us on Twitter - Join us on Facebook - ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER The New Africa Channel doesn’t fully own some of the materials compiled in its videos.
