The introduction to Willis Conover’s “Voice of America Jazz Hour“ from a shortwave broadcast during June 1981. As a shortwave listener, I frequently heard Willis Conover’s jazz show on VOA and admired his dulcent tones. The slow delivery by VOA announcers in some broadcasts was Voice of America’s “special English,“ designed to aid international listeners who were not native speakers of English. While Willis Conover was well-known to international audiences, fewer Americans knew of him because VOA does not broadcast to the USA.
