US vetoes UN call for ‘immediate’ ceasefire in Gaza again
The United States has vetoed a resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Washington blocked a proposal put forward by Algeria which it called “wishful and irresponsible”. The resolution did not link a ceasefire to the release of hostages.
It comes after the US put forward an alternative resolution calling for a “temporary ceasefire” in a break with the Israeli government. The US plan, which opposes an Israeli invasion of Rafah, has not been scheduled for a vote.
Thirteen council members voted in favour of the text, while Britain abstained. The UK has not vetoed a Security Council resolution since 1989.
It was the third such US veto since the Hamas terror attack on Oct 7 and comes as Brett McGurk, the US Middle East envoy, visits Israel for further hostage talks.
