11-16-2023 Afton, Virginia - Wildfire, Aerial Firefighting, i-64 Shutdown, Shenandoah National Park

***NOT FOR BROADCAST*** Contact Brett Adair with Live Storms Media to license. brett@ A vehicle fire on i-64 at Afton Mountain, VA earlier today has led to a wildfire near the southern portions of Shenandoah National Park. Firefighters are unable to contain the fire using ground tactics alone, aerial support was brought in this afternoon. Helicopters are continuing fire suppression efforts this afternoon, and can be seen making pass after pass over the burn area. Interstate 64 and HWY 250 have been shutdown to traffic due to the fire. Smoky conditions can be observed into the Shenandoah Valley as well as east of the Blue Ridge Mountains towards Charlottesville. Air quality is poor across areas near the fire this afternoon. Extreme drought conditions across the area have only aided in the spread of the wildfire.
