The Curonian Spit is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and its northern within southwestern Lithuania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.
The Curonian Spit for centuries has been an area of massive traveling dunes, the so-called “Lithuanian Sahara”. Its few fishing villages used to be ephemeral: over 10 of them are known to have been consumed by the moving dunes.
For me, it’s one of the most beautiful places in my home country. Peaceful walks, unusual places such as “The Witches Mountain“ with timber sculptures in a forest, breathtaking views and nature. It is a place every nature lover will appreciate and will feel quite small when visiting the monumental dunes.
Enjoy!
