Greece now! The storm in Volos became historic in 120 years! The wind speed reaches 190 km/h!
A devastating flood wreaked havoc in the Greek city of Volos, flooding homes, making roads impassable and leaving thousands of residents without a livelihood. The flood, caused by torrential rains that lasted several days, destroyed local infrastructure, leading to mass evacuations and an emergency response by public authorities.
Located in central Greece, Volos is a bustling port city and gateway to the Sporades Islands. However, its geographical location, between the Gulf of Pagaseti and the Pelion Mountains, has made it particularly vulnerable to flooding. The downpour, described as one of the worst in recent years, caused rivers to overflow and drainage systems to fail, resulting in extensive damage to residential areas and agricultural land. According to local authorities, flood waters have reached unprecedented levels, and some parts of the city have been completely flooded.
Emergency services are working around the clock to rescue those trapped in the rising waters. Boats and helicopters have been deployed to reach isolated communities, while the military is assisting with disaster relief efforts. Despite these efforts, several regions remain cut off due to landslides and damaged bridges, making it difficult to deliver aid. Authorities have urged residents to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel while work continues to restore vital services.
The flooding also severely affected the economy of Volos, with local businesses, especially in agriculture and tourism, suffering the most damage. Many farms in the surrounding region were submerged, jeopardizing this season’s harvest. In the city center, shopkeepers were desperately trying to save their goods as floodwaters flooded their premises.
Local authorities called on the Greek government and the European Union to provide immediate assistance, emphasizing that the city lacks the resources to cope with the scale of the disaster. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged full support for the recovery efforts and promised that financial assistance would be provided to affected families and businesses. Meanwhile, meteorologists are warning of heavier rains in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding.
The flooding in Volos is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather conditions that have hit various parts of Greece this year. A few weeks earlier, forest fires devastated large areas of the country, highlighting the growing impact of climate change on the region.
